The Longest Ride
Published in Hardcover by Henry Holt & Company, Inc. (June, 1999)
Average review score:

The Longest Ride's First ReveiwI thought this book was very interesting, and I didn't even read the first book. This book's introduction brings you to where the first book really didn't have to happen, as if this were the first book. I had to read this book for an assignment at school and thought of reading it as more of a chore than a pleasure, but once the book gets going, it's pretty dang hard to put down. This book is about an escaped slave boy, Midnight Son, and his friend, Lou Boy, who is not colored. Midnight falls asleep in some snow after a cattle drive and is rescued by a few Arapaho Indians. They bring him to their run-down, make-shift camp, where he meets Winter Mary. Winter Mary's mother, Raven Woman, was also an escaped slave. Winter Mary also had a brother, Eagle Eye. Midnight refuses to go warn the main Indian village of an attack, so Eagle Eye goes to do it himself. After the attack, Midnight, Winter Mary, and Lou Boy find Eagle Eye, and then they carry out Raven Woman's wishes for Midnight to go find her family. Although Midnight does not find Raven Woman's family in this book, he does go on with Winter Mary, Lou Boy, and Eagle Eye to try to find his long lost sister, Lady, who had been sold to another family at an early age, his two sisters, Queen and Truth, and his mother. On his way to find them, he goes back to the place where they worked as slaves. The slaves remaining because their owner hadn't told them that the north had won the civil war and ended slavery told him that one day his father left and they never saw him again. He then continues on to try to find his family with his friends.

Los Hijos De Sanchez/the Children of Sanchez
Published in Paperback by Editorial Grijalbo, S.A. de C.V. (October, 1998)
Average review score:

A realistic portrayal of the life in "la vecindad"I read this book as part of a college assingment many years ago; and I still keep all the characters in my heart.
It is a painful analysis of a family who faces poverty and all the uncertainty that comes with it. The loss of the mother and the lack of the father's affection for his children, makes for a story that was so painful at times; that I had to put it down and not deal with it for days at a time.
What makes it so great, it's the fact that is a true story and it leaves you with a sense of hope. Seeing how all the characters made it in the end, and still managed to love each other unconditionally. Read it only if you want to experience what is like to live in a vecindad in Mexico city; with all that comes with that!

Love in Vain
Published in Hardcover by Subterranean (October, 1901)

Excellent Short Story Collection Of Shiner's Best WorkIt's a pity this slender tome is out of print. It certainly deserves being republished, hopefully by one of the major publishers based in New York City. Shiner's strengths in examining the human condition are abundantly evident here. Although known primarily as a writer of science fiction and fantasy, there are many tales in this collection which don't neatly fit into either category. One of the most notable examples is his homage to rock and roll in "Jeff Beck", one of his finest tales of short fiction. Yet there are memorable tales such as "Mystery Train" in which Elvis Presley sees a glimpse of his future and "Steam Engine Time", with its fascinating mix of 19th Century Western and rock and roll, and "Gold", a memorable fantasy about buried treasure and legendary pirate Jean Lafitte. Here's hoping that this fine short story collection shall be published again soon in a larger printing; it certainly deserves a wide readership.

Lydia Bailey
Published in Paperback by Down East Books (January, 2001)
Average review score:

A classic adventure storyIt's been more than thirty years since I first read "Lydia Bailey" and I'm glad to see it available again after years out of print. Kenneth Roberts was a terrific writer and he has a terrific story to tell, with action ranging from New England in the early 1800's, to Haiti during Toussaint L'Ouverture's rebellion, to the Barbary Coast. This novel is a little bit detective story, a whole lot of rousing adventure and just the right amount of romance, mixed in with plenty of pointed observations along the way about political shenanigans and the highs and lows of human nature. They really don't write 'em this way any more--which is a shame. Very highly recommended!

Lynching at Broken Butte

Excellent western mystery.A Marshall is riding through town on a stagecoach and just happens to stop in a small town that has a big secret. As the townspeople become more and more nervous, he realizes that they are hiding something. A secret that could cost him his life. This was the first Lewis B. Patten book I read and it is excellent. If you like Louis L'Amour you will like Patten. His characters are believable. Great book.

A Machine Knitter's Guide to Creating Fabrics: Jacquard, Lace, Intarsia, Ripple, and More
Published in Hardcover by Lark Books (March, 1986)
Average review score:

The definitive text on machine knitting.Ms Lewis has long been considered the expert in
machine knitting and as a long-time professor of
the subject in New York City's Parson School, she
knows how to impart her knowledge to the student.
Her book covers all important fabric types and
shows how to achieve them on four categories of
machines. As one who attended her classes and
has been using her book as a Bible for many years,
I'd recommend it as the premier tome for anyone
who is
interested in not only high quality products but
also understanding HOW the machines product the
various effects.
